Service Overview

Did you know the government can help cover the cost of stop-smoking medications?
If you’re ready to quit smoking, there are two effective treatment options available — and both may be covered for eligible B.C. residents.

1) Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) – Fully Covered

Nicotine Replacement Therapy provides nicotine in a controlled way without the harmful toxins found in cigarettes. Options include:

  • Nicotine gum
  • Lozenges
  • Patches
  • Inhalers

These products help reduce withdrawal symptoms while you gradually lower your nicotine intake.
The government covers 100% of the cost of one form of NRT for up to 84 days per calendar year.
You can access NRT free of charge, without a prescription, at our pharmacy.
Simply bring your Care Card and a list of your current medications for registration.

2) Prescription Stop-Smoking Medications – Partially Covered

Two commonly prescribed stop-smoking medications in B.C. are:

  • Bupropion (Zyban®)
  • Varenicline (Champix®)

These medications do not contain nicotine but work on the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Coverage for these prescription medications depends on your Fair Pharmacare plan and whether you’ve met your annual deductible.
After consulting your doctor, bring your Care Card, prescription, and any third-party insurance cards to our pharmacy. We’ll check if the medication is covered for you.
