Protect Yourself Against Pneumonia

The pneumonia vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 65 and older and other individuals at higher risk of serious illness.

What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia is a lung infection that can cause coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing. It spreads when bacteria are inhaled through the nose or throat and enter the lungs. While anyone can get pneumonia, it can lead to serious complications — including meningitis and bloodstream infections (sepsis) — in young children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions.

How can the vaccine help?
The pneumonia vaccine reduces the risk of serious infection and complications. It is available year-round and can be administered on-site by our pharmacists.

Protect Yourself Against Shingles

The shingles vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 50 and older (if eligible and not contraindicated).

What is shingles?
Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you’ve had chickenpox (or the chickenpox vaccine), the virus stays dormant in your body and can reactivate later in life as shingles.

Shingles typically appears as an itchy, blistering rash on the face or body. It can also cause severe nerve pain that may continue long after the rash clears, a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

How can the vaccine help?
The shingles vaccine can:

  • Reduce your risk of developing shingles
  • Lessen the severity and duration of shingles symptoms
  • Lower the chance of long-term nerve pain (PHN)

Vaccine details:

  • Two-dose series: Doses are given 2–6 months apart
  • Available year-round at our pharmacy
  • Not covered by B.C. Pharmacare, but may be covered by extended health or third-party insurance plans

What are tetanus and diphtheria?

  • Tetanus (“lockjaw”) is a serious infection caused by bacteria found in soil. It enters the body through cuts or scrapes and produces a toxin that causes painful muscle tightening. Tetanus can affect breathing muscles and may be fatal in up to 1 in 5 cases.

How can the vaccine help? The Td vaccine is the best way to protect against both tetanus and diphtheria. It is recommended:

  • Every 10 years for continued protection
